Testament (2003)

The third album by Enoch & the Watchers raised a few eyebrows when it was first released in 2003 by following the distribution with a tour that mocked the organized church. The band dressed up in costumes with two prophets on stage, a priest on drums, a Catholic schoolgirl on vocals, and a demon on bass. The band spoke in tongues, begged for money, and cast out demons. Some of the audiences were offended by the display, but overall, most people understood that it was a gimmick, and they played along with the band by shouting out “amen” and “hallelujah” in a cult-like way. As for the album, “Order on Order Line on Line” makes the bands opening statement and seduces the listener into wanting to hear more. It’s followed by “Gog,” a prophetic outcry taken from a passage in the Book of Ezekiel. The highlight of the CD, however, is “Song of the Lamb” which features the singing ability of Tortelvis from the band Dread Zeppelin. This reggae tune received radio airplay across the globe and made the Watchers a household name outside of the States. The rest of the record does have some fine tunes, but the last track on the CD, “Leeway into Heaven,” captures the comical theme of the band and its disturbing messages. Tortelvis’ voice is also featured on this track. As for the band, Enoch Watcher’s genius is revealed once again in his songwriting. Jose Sanchez’s drumming is sound, and Jon Taylor’s voice is featured. It’s a shame Jane Drury’s vocal ability was not used more often on the album but what the listener does hear is exhilarating.
